The meeting of two worlds

On week two “the meeting of two worlds” I was shocked by the content. When I was younger I was always taught that Christopher Columbus accomplished many things during his voyage but as I got older and through the media, I realized he did not accomplish or discover anything. He claimed to have discovered land that was already discovered and settled on. This makes me question if christopher columbus did not discover any uninhabited land, what impact did he have on europe?

In the lecture, the question is asked if “it is worth asking ourselves why we are so eager to believe such myths”. And I think the answer to that is as humans, we need the answers to everything such as how something is discovered and our first instinct is to believe the oppressor or the person in power without really looking into how it happened. As time went on I think we have discovered the lies and it was brought to light the truths of exploration. In addition, my thoughts changed after reading about the events in his words because I realized he was following his dream but disrespected indeginious people while doing it.

I first heard of Christopher Columbus being a villain from the media which ultimately made me do my research in my teenage years. This led me to think how he has holidays named after him and how he’s praised in America if he did not discover it. This immediately led me to think when it was stated in the lecture that the Columbus story was said to be an “allegory” whose true object is missing or misplaced. Which makes me think Christopher Columbus is not a villain but is thought to work hard but immediately fails. He was not planning to go to america but he accidentally found himself there as it states in the text” to those lands of India to meet their rulers and to see the towns and lands and their distribution, and all other things, and to find out in what manner they might be converted to our Holy Faith; and you ordered me not to go eastward by land, as is customary, but to take my course westward, where, so far as we know, no man has travelled before today.”
